As Canada’s leading steelmaker, Dofasco recognizes its responsibility
to employees, the environment and the communities in which it operates.
This isn’t a new notion, ArcelorMittal Dofasco has always invested in
its people, and the company’s motto Our Product is Steel. Our Strength is People.® extends to the local community. To help support Hamilton and its
people, Dofasco invests approximately $2
million in non-profit organizations annually.
Each year, Dofasco’s investment committee selects causes to support. Through our Corporate Community Investment Fund, the team
focuses on arts and culture; education; environment and conservation;
health and human services; and sports and recreation. Dofasco has made
major capital investments in: Art Gallery of Hamilton, St. Joseph’s
Healthcare, Royal Botanical Gardens, Theatre Aquarius, the United Way of
Greater Hamilton and Burlington and YWCA. Each of these community
partners is chosen for their dedication to helping the region and its
residents grow.
To cultivate the next generation of steelmakers, Dofasco also invests
in education, supporting local schools and universities such as Mohawk
College and McMaster University. These institutions help Dofasco develop
new steel products as well as train its future workforce.
It is not only the company that funds local initiatives, Dofasco
employees are also known for their generosity. Since WWII, Dofasco
employees have donated a portion of their paycheck through the Employee
Donation Fund to local causes, raising an impressive $40 million over 70
years.
Many of these employees also attend the local sports and charity
events that are part of Hamilton’s DNA. Thousands of residents turn up
to participate in the annual Around the Bay Road Race, the Burlington Sound
of Music Festival and Hamilton’s Super Crawl art fair, all of which are
sponsored by Dofasco. Attendees can often spot Dofasco’s bright orange
banners and volunteers on these occasions.
Although funding new programs and sponsoring events are important to
Dofasco’s corporate responsibility commitment, employees also offer
their time, donate resources and lend expertise to help local
initiatives. Demonstrating versatility, Team Orange volunteers have
staffed race booths, built homes and managed food drives. Many members
of Dofasco’s workforce also sit on local boards, offering advice and
organizing community programs.
Dozens of these sports and education events take place at Dofasco’s
onsite F.H. Sherman Recreation Centre. Extensive summer and winter
programs are designed to keep Hamilton healthy and entertained with
fitness classes, team sports, ice skating competitions and wellness
workshops. Whether attending a sports game, learning about healthy
lifestyle choices or starting a new hobby, the centre welcomes thousands
of Hamiltonians each year.
