UPDATE October 3, 2025:
Normal operations have resumed and are stable. Flaring ended at approximately 12 noon yesterday.
More information on flaring: Gases are generated during the high temperature process of converting coal into coke. This gas is referred to as coke oven gas. Typically, this gas is captured, cleaned, then reused as fuel in the coke plant. Flaring is when the gas is ignited at the battery bleeder stack which combusts the gas and is done as a means of environmental control and safety. The dark orange flare is the burning of the gas. Coke plant flare emissions are mostly composed of nitrogen, followed by oxygen, carbon dioxide and moisture. Less than 1% of emissions from the bleeder stacks are composed of fine particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide.
ORIGINAL POST September 30, 2025:
Urgent maintenance in our Coke Plant off gas systems has required Coke Oven Gas from No.2 Coke Plant to be flared which produces additional dark orange flames that may be visible to community members.
The flaring process is controlled and monitored by our teams and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has been notified of this activity. The flaring is anticipated to continue throughout most of the week (week of September 29, 2025) as the maintenance work is expected to continue longer than initially expected. Our teams are working to complete the work to resume normal operations and the company will provide a subsequent notice when the work is complete and flaring stopped.
