Congratulations to our team in the Hot Mill for being awarded the Institute Medal, the American Iron and Steel Institute’s highest technical honour, for their paper “Implementation of High-Turbulence Roll Cooling at ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Hot Strip Mill.”

The project was a 5-year collaborative effort to install High Turbulence Roll Cooling in our 7-stand mill. When rolling slabs into coils, it is important to keep the work rolls cool in order to increase productivity and to ensure good surface quality of the steel strip. High Turbulence Roll Cooling utilizes a new header design that sprays water onto the rolls at much lower pressure and adds position control which allows for close uniform spacing between the header and the work roll. For their efforts and achievements the team, working with colleagues from both ArcelorMittal Gent and Centre de Recherche Metallurgique (Metallurgical Research Centre) in Liege Belgium, have been awarded the Institute Medal – the American and Iron Steel Institute’s highest technology award.

“The Institute Medal is the highest honour given by the steel industry to recognize the critical R&D work that continues to move our industry forward as a leader in manufacturing innovation,” said Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of AISI.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco VP Technology, Angela Pappin, said the award is a reflection of the talent and expertise of the ArcelorMittal Dofasco team. “This achievement is the result of knowledge sharing, perseverance and a relentless pursuit of continuous improvement,” she said. “The team took an initial HTRC installation and made improvements on it to create a unique second generation solution at Dofasco. Now that solution is being shared with our global colleagues.”

The system has resulted in a more efficient cooling method which has allowed for higher productivity. In addition, the project resulted in 13,000 Mega Watt Hours of electricity savings annually, as the total number of roll cooling pumps for the system have been reduced from 5 to 3.

Congratulations to our team and the more than 70 employees that have contributed to this project!Argon Injection

We should also note that ArcelorMittal Dofasco was also named a finalist for the paper “Impact of Argon Injection at Continuous Caster.
