ArcelorMittal was honored to receive two awards from American Metal Market, a leading publication for the metals industry, at its annual Steel Excellence Awards held June 14 in New York City.

Corporate-Advocate-of-the-Year-Winner-2016ArcelorMittal was named “Corporate Advocate of the Year” by American Metal Market. This award specifically recognizes ArcelorMittal’s leadership in sustainability and corporate responsibility in North America and it is the first time that it has been awarded.

“We are pleased to be part of the North American team recognized for taking a leadership role in the steel industry, said Tony Valeri, VP Corporate Affairs. “We continue to be committed to our 10 global sustainable development outcomes that recognize our responsibility and obligation to all of our stakeholders to lead responsibly.”

Much of our nomination focused on outcome #9, “Pipeline of talented scientists and engineers for tomorrow.” ArcelorMittal’s STEM work internally and within the community focuses on recruiting a workforce to support the future of steelmaking, inspiring young people to choose a STEM path, and enhancing the diversity of STEM students.

ArcelorMittal also won the “Best Innovation – Product” award for the recent launch of its S-in motion® Mid-size Sedan and SUV. The S-in motion® Mid-sized Sedan and SUV offers a set of lightweight steel solutions that allows automakers to achieve a 20 to 26 percent body structure weight reduction, compared to similar 2015 North American mid-size sedans and SUVs.

“This is fantastic recognition of ArcelorMittal’s leadership in providing lightweight steel solutions that help automakers achieve significant weight reduction and improved safety performance at a lower cost and with less environmental impact than competing materials,” said Blake Zuidema, director of automotive product applications for ArcelorMittal Global R&D.

While a mid-size sedan and SUV share a substantial number of common parts, they have widely different vehicle masses and powertrains. Yet, ArcelorMittal still achieved weight reductions in excess of 20 percent on both vehicle versions at an attractive lightweighting cost.

“The S-in motion® Mid-size Sedan and SUV proves to OEMs that it is possible to achieve substantial weight reduction with advanced steels on a multi-vehicle platform,” said Zuidema.

The innovation further expands ArcelorMittal’s S-in motion® program, which began in 2010 with the launch of the C-segment vehicle. Today, S-in motion® includes a broad range of vehicle solutions, including the pick-up truck and battery electric vehicle, as well as other critical body structure components such as the door ring and door.
