ArcelorMittal Dofasco has been working towards the permanent shut down of our No.1 Coke and By-Products Plants. We are in the final stages with the last charges of coal into the ovens scheduled for the morning of Sunday, March 29. Our team has been planning for the safe shut down and will follow a prescribed procedure through to March 30 when the final coke will be pushed from the ovens.

Some of the procedures include switching from Blast Furnace Gas for heating to Coke Oven Gas in order to manage the reduced fuel demand. In addition, the By-Products exhauster will be shut down when Coke Oven Gas volume from remaining ovens becomes too low for the machine to operate. When the exhauster is shutdown, Coke Oven Gas from remaining ovens will be flared in a controlled manner. The flare will be visible for about 10 hours until all the ovens are pushed empty. The final push will take place on the morning of March 30th and fuel to the Coke Plant will be turned off in the 12 hours after the last push.

The detailed plans for the shutdown have been communicated to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
