Watch the launch film below to learn more about XCarb™ :

We believe that steel has a critical role to play in helping society decarbonize and will very much be a solution to the problem.

As the world’s leading steel company, we have a significant responsibility to innovate, implement and navigate a successful pathway towards a cleaner steelmaking industry. Our journey towards becoming carbon neutral by 2050, having aligned with the Paris climate goals and the European Green Deal by committing to reduce European CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 and be carbon neutral by 2050, is well underway.

“We have an important role to play in helping society deliver the objectives of the Paris agreement and are determined to lead our industry’s transition to carbon neutral steel.”

Aditya Mittal, CEO ArcelorMittal

We have a significant and broad range of decarbonization initiatives underway and in order to help our stakeholders understand the breadth of work we are undertaking in this area, we have launched XCarb™, an umbrella brand that groups together all of the reduced, low and zero carbon steel making activities of ArcelorMittal, as well as wider initiatives and green innovation projects. As a result, we will be able to leverage a single effort focused on achieving demonstrable progress towards carbon neutral steel.

XCarb™ serves as demonstrable evidence of our determination and accelerating commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. We will continue to drive innovation to meet our decarbonization goals and are committed to leading the industry transition towards carbon neutral steel. We have the scale, resources, technology prowess and ambition required make a significant impact.

XCarb™ branded initiatives

Alongside the new XCarb™ brand, we have launched three XCarb™ initiatives: the XCarb™ innovation fund, XCarb™ green steel certificates and XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced for products made via the Electric Arc Furnace route using scrap.

XCarb™ Frequently Asked Questions

XCarb™ is designed to bring together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low and zero-carbon products and steelmaking activities, as well as wider initiatives and green innovation projects, into a single effort focused on achieving demonstrable progress towards carbon neutral steel.  XCarb™ RRP – recycled and renewably produced in North America is steel that is produced via EAF using 100% renewable energy and minimum 70% scrap.

XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced steel is a physical coil product.   Steel ordered with the XCarb™ RRP label has a lower CO2 intensity than both the worldsteel and North American AISI average.  Unlike any other North American low or net zero offering, XCarb™ RRP includes Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, a cradle to gate Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) using the ISO 14044 standard that has been independently audited and does not employ the use of carbon offsets to achieve the stated low carbon intensity.

The GHG Protocol is the world’s most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standard.  It divides emissions into three categories or scopes: “Scope 1” direct emissions (emissions form our smokestacks), “Scope 2” indirect emissions from the consumption of electricity and “Scope 3” all other indirect emissions (includes the carbon footprint of the goods that we purchase such as alloying elements and for our customers, scope 3 includes the carbon footprint of the steel that they purchase)

The electricity used in the steelmaking process is independently verified, with a Confirmation Letter certifying that it is from renewable sources. This is ensured by our purchasing of ‘Renewable Energy Certificates’ (RECs), a market-based offering that certifies the bearer owns a specific amount (in megawatt-hours) of electricity generated from a renewable energy resource and is connected to the same grid.

Purchasing our XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel allows our customers to reduce the global CO2 footprint of their projects, products, and finished goods. To calculate the total CO2 impact of your products, our customers can use the figures reported in the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA): they are independently certified by a third-party. Customers receive a certificate that outlines orders that XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced label applies to as well as certification at the coil level.   Unlike any other North American carbon related offering, this allows our customers to report lower Scope 3 emissions.  For many customers the scope 3 emissions from the steel that they purchase account for the largest portion of the carbon footprint of the end use product.

Today! XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced steel is available in Hot Rolled, Cold Rolled, Coated (GI, GA, GU) and Organically Coated.
