Painted steel is used in many market applications including, cladding & roofing, residential & garage doors, ceiling grid systems, containers and major appliances.

Pre-painted steel is a steel coil painted before forming using the coil coating process. Coil coating is a continuous and highly automated process for coating metal in coil form before fabrication. In one continuous process at ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s paint facility Baycoat, a steel coil up to 60 inches wide and at up to 480 feet per minute, is unwound, and both the top and bottom sides are cleaned, chemically treated, primed, oven cured, top coated, oven cured again, rewound and packaged for shipment.

The pre-painted steel product is composed of a steel substrate - cold rolled or zinc-based metallic coated - with a surface treatment layer, a paint primer coating and a paint finish topcoat. A wide range of paint systems that can be subjected to a wide variety of forming processes without damage or loss of adhesion are used to provide high durability, forming properties and unique aesthetic characteristics.

Advantages of pre-painted steels:

  • No paint shop at the customer facility
  • Quality of its aesthetic features
  • Long term durability (weathering and corrosion resistance)

Types of Pre-Paint steel

Perspectra Plus Series™ is the preferred prepainted material for cladding and roofing applications in North America where long-lasting paint performances are required. An enhanced state of the art silicone modified polyester (SMP) paint system makes Perspectra Plus Series™ ideal for commercial and residential metal roofing, agricultural and industrial metal building components, pre-engineered metal building systems, insulated metal panels as well as rainware products.

Metallic coil coating products are 2-coat paint systems comprised of a primer and a topcoat, designed for a variety of applications from less demanding to roofing and cladding applications for aesthetic performance.

Metallic Polyesters are the most cost-effective metallic paint system available and are typically used for interior applications.

Metallic Polyurethanes (Perspectra Metallics™ Series) are formulated for the requirements of exterior building applications. Perspectra Metallic™ Polyurethane Series meets the performance requirements of AAMA 2604-21.

Metallic PVDFs are a high-end paint system ideal for use in roofing and cladding applications. This product line utilizes durable polyurethane resins. Metallic PVDF meets the performance requirements of AAMA 2605-20.

Wrinkle is a highly durable, textured, low gloss prepainted steel that brings differentiation and originality to residential, commercial and architectural buildings. Typical applications are roofing, stamped or roll-formed metal shingles and siding panels.

Wrinkle’s textured coating gives building products a consistent matt appearance from any angle or position. Available in ten standard popular colours, it can be customized in various colour options.

Granite Cool Black coatings are black finish polyester paint systems designed to reduce heat build-up in insulated metal panels for steel door applications. Using the Granite Cool technology in foam insulated garage door, the peak surface temperature during service life will decrease by up to 15°C.

Exterior Polyester series are 2-coat paint systems. The topcoat paint system chemistry consists of a durable polyester resin designed for exterior end-uses that require greater flexibility. The standard backer on the reverse side is compatible for foam adhesion.

Typical applications are standard smooth or textured finishes for garage and residential entry doors applications. The standard finish paint systems are designed to be suitable for re-coating without extensive surface preparation such as solvent washing or abrasive cleaning. Post paint systems commonly used with good results are water based acrylics.

10,000 Series is a fluoropolymer 2-coat system comprised of a corrosion inhibiting primer and a PVDF colour coat. The colour layer is formulated with a minimum of 70% Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000 PVDF resins with proven pigmentation for maximum colour retention. This paint system is designed for sidewall and roofing applications in architectural building projects that are more demanding for aesthetic performance.

10,000 Series is available in smooth finishes in a wide variety of customized colours in addition to standard colours.

Barrier Series is comprised of a continuously hot dipped galvanized sheet steel substrate with factory applied primer and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) topcoat. Barrier Series is available in 4-mil, or 8-mil coating thicknesses, in one side or full coat options (one side or both sides painted).

Barrier Series thick coating offers a remarkably effective, lasting barrier against harsh and aggressive industrial environments.

Typical applications include heavy industrial such as mines and refineries, pulp and paper mills, potash plant.

The topside surface (normally the intended exposed surface) is textured with a paint embossment performed on the paint line for uniform gloss and appearance.
