Global Research and Development (R&D) is the heartbeat of innovation at ArcelorMittal.
Our dedicated team works both independently and collaboratively with other business areas, renowned universities, research institutes and leading experts to explore the latest technological advances to improve the steels we create, the processes we use and the impacts we make.
Each year, we invest close to $300m in Global R&D, launch around 50 new products and solutions, and protect more than 100 new inventions – powering progress for our company, our customers and our industry.
ArcelorMittal operates 14 research and development (R&D) centers across the globe.
We employ 1,650 full-time researchers working to create, test, improve and deploy new steel products, processes and solutions. More than 80 of those researchers work at the R&D Centre in Dofasco. While Dofasco’s R&D centre was formalized in 1956 the company has been grounded in innovation since it became the first Canadian steel company to produce steel plate in 1928. Our first Research paper was published in 1953.
The aim of our research and development is to continually improve the quality of our steel, our steelmaking processes, and the steel solutions we offer. This means investigating and developing disruptive technologies, reducing the carbon footprint of steel and optimizing costs while maintaining uncompromising quality. To achieve our objectives, we work within a fully integrated value chain, from mining to the final product we deliver.
