Operations Update: No.3 Coke Plant

Our Cokemaking team is preparing to bring the plant down safely and in a controlled manner, with the last push of coke to be completed on April 13, 2026.

The team has done an incredible job in operating the plant safely, and we are very thankful for their service and dedication. Generations of employees have worked in the Cokemaking business unit and at No.3 Plant. We want to recognize their expertise, resilience and passion and their contribution to building ArcelorMittal Dofasco into the strongest Canadian steel company.

Impacted employees in Cokemaking are being reassigned to new roles and areas of the plant and each person has an individual plan and path with the company.

This decommissioning was envisioned and first announced in 2021 as part of our decarbonization pathway. Decommissioning the plant has positive community and environmental benefits including reduced visible emissions, Benzo (a) Pyrene and Benzene emissions.

We have one remaining Cokemaking facility, “No.2 Coke Plant” (No.1 Coke Plant was decommissioned in 2015). Coke is used as a fuel in the Blast Furnace process which produces liquid iron used in steelmaking. We will focus on operating No.2 Plant responsibly and invest in maintenance of the equipment to ensure we abide by our Environmental Compliance Approval from the Ontario Ministry of Environment Conservation and Parks. 
 
Looking ahead, the organization is committed to continuously improving the environmental and community impacts of our site. We will also continue to take proactive and responsible decisions and actions to protect our Canadian melted and poured steel and the livelihoods of our people. Our long-term decarbonization intentions remain and we will continue to work towards these ambitions.

Dofasco has a strong 114 -year history of steelmaking in Hamilton and the decommissioning of No.3 Coke Plant marks another shift in our technology and process. Today, my thoughts turn to the generations of dedicated cokemakers at No.3 plant who have done their job with pride and with excellence over the years. I want to thank them, past and present, for their efforts and their expertise. They have each contributed to making our company the strongest steel maker in Canada.”
